Rewriting How Jewellery Insurance Is Sold Online

Assetsure is a UK-based specialist insurer, known for providing cover for valuable items including jewellery, watches, and bicycles. They pride themselves on offering clear, straightforward policies and great customer service. As part of their growth plans, Assetsure wanted to explore new ways of selling insurance by embedding it directly into the buying journey of partner retailers.
The Challenge
Selling insurance usually means sending a customer to a separate form or third-party site, which adds friction and risks losing the sale. Assetsure wanted to change that. The goal was to offer insurance seamlessly at the point of purchase, with no redirects and no extra steps.
The first retailer to launch the service would be The Diamond Store, a leading online jewellery seller. The solution needed to:
- Offer customers an insuranse option directly at checkout
- Issue policies instantly without manual processing
- Work entirely in the background so Assetsure’s team didn’t have to touch each transaction
- Scale to other retailers in the future

Our Approach
We built two core components:
1. Shopify Plugin
A custom plugin for Shopify that lets retailers add an “Insure your purchase” option at checkout. Customers can select their cover in just one click, with the premium automatically calculated and added to their basket.
2. Bespoke Laravel Application
At the heart of the setup is a Laravel application acting as middleware. When a sale is made on Shopify, the app takes the order data, transforms it into the correct format, and sends it to Assetsure’s bespoke insurance policy platform for processing.
It also gives Assetsure full control over where insurance is offered, allowing them to specify which products are eligible, and to manage the policy pricing without touching the retailer’s system.
Because the process is entirely automated, policies can be sold 24/7 without Assetsure’s team having to manually approve or process anything.
The Outcome
The Diamond Store launched with the plugin and saw over 1,000 policies sold in the first 10 weeks. Every policy was issued instantly, without a single manual step from Assetsure’s staff. The result is a completely hands-off revenue stream that runs day and night.
The platform is already proving its value and is built to roll out to more retailers in future.
What's Next
With a successful first launch, the focus is now on expanding the plugin to more retailers and platforms, giving Assetsure a scalable way to sell insurance wherever valuable items are sold.
